ABOUT GRANDMASTER HUNG WAI WING
Grandmaster Hung Wai Wing played a key role in introducing Taekwondo to
the islands of the Indian Ocean, including Madagascar, Seychelles, Comoros,
Réunion, and Rodrigues. He provided unwavering support to these countries in
promoting the martial art and assisting them in gaining affiliation with the
World Taekwondo Federation. He was awarded the certificate of merit for
“Tireless contribution as well as invaluable contribution to the development of
Taekwondo in the Comoros” by the Ministry of National Education, Research,
Culture and Arts in charge of Youth and Sports of Comoros, in recognition of
his exemplary contributions.
Grandmaster Hung Wai Wing also consistently supported countries across the
African region in promoting the development and recognition of Taekwondo.
In 1979, he was a founding Member of the Africa Taekwondo Union in
Abidjan, Ivory Coast. He was Vice-Chairman of the Arbitration Board at the
Africa Games held respectively in Egypt in 1991 and in Zimbabwe in 1995. He
also chaired the Arbitration Board at the African Taekwondo Championships in
Madagascar in 2006. In 2025, he was bestowed the distinguished honor of being
appointed as the Honorary Vice-President of the Africa Taekwondo Union, a
role that reflects his significant contributions and esteemed standing within the
African Taekwondo community.
The World Taekwondo Federation appointed Grandmaster Hung Wai Wing on
several committees. He was Member of the Technical Committee in 1984,
Vice-Chairman of the Legislative Committee in 1990, Member of the Public
Relations Committee in 1995, Vice-Chairman of the Games Committee in 2001
and Member of the Education Committee in 2003.
Grandmaster Hung Wai Wing received formal citation at the 24th Olympic
Games in Seoul, 1988 for “devoted effort and contribution for development of
Taekwondo in Mauritius and at international level”. In 2022, during a ceremony
in New Jersey, USA he was inducted into the Taekwondo Hall of Fame for
“Life Time Achievement” in recognition of his role in the development of
taekwondo in Mauritius and within the Indian Ocean and African regions.
Grandmaster Hung Wai Wing continues to play an active role in training and
supervising training sessions. He remains a central figure in the supervision of
Mauritian athletes for regional and international competitions. He is President
of Mauritius Taekwondo Association and he is currently Adviser in martial arts
at the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
